Non-League Action
R.A. Long defeated Astoria Saturday in a low scoring affair, 37 - 26. Katie Gudgel lead the Lumberjill's with 11 points.

Battle Ground took a long visit to Astoria Oregon, Friday, and forward Gabi Dixson had a huge game for the Tiger's with a double/double 28 points, and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough, Astoria was to quick, and defeated the Tiger's 61 - 51.

GSHL 2A
It's so important to learn to close the deal. Finish a team when you've got them down. Lessons that must be learn in order to be successful over a full season. Washougal had a 14-12 lead at half time and was playing well. Then R.A. Long turned it up in the second half and the Panther's didn't go with them. The Lumberjill's scored 29 points in the second half, 20 in the 4th quarter to defeat Washougal 41 - 26. Katie Gudgell lead the attack from R.A. Long with 12 points and Kelsey Craft added 10. The Panther's were lead by Alicia McElroy with 13.

Ridgefield continued it's winning ways with free throws in the final seconds to overcome Mark Morris 35 - 34. With Anna Pengra still feeling the effects of an injured back and not playing for the Spudder's, Mark Morris was able to make this a back and forth battle. A low scoring affair, only one player hit double figures, Angelica Kent with 10 points for the Monarch's. Ridgefield's Lauren Landerholm, Nichole Kates, and Shelby Williams did just enough to win.

Trico 1A
LaCenter is attempting to re-establish itself after a tough week, which included illness and injury to key players last week. Bouncing back this week with two very nice wins defeating Kalama last night 78 - 42. Now the Wildcat's are soundly in second place and eagerly awaiting a rematch with first place Ilwaco with a full squad. There was some grumbling last night from the coach of Kalama, after the game complaining about LaCenter pressing with a 40 point lead. The rematch, next month, may get interesting. Hannah Trigg had 24 points last night, Lauren Baker 22, and Marissa Moore added 21.

GHSL 2A
Woodland's choke hold on 2A titles in this area (winning 11 out of the last 12) was all but snatch away last night by Hockinson. The Hawk's left no doubt who was the better team in the 2A this year, last night dominating the Beaver's with a swarming defense that lead to several easy buckets. I said it early, I'll say it again. Hockinson is the team to beat in the 2A, they are now 4-0 in league. Daron Dean had 18 and Lejla Mlivic scored 11 for the Hawk's, while the Beaver's were lead by Emily Smith with 11 points. Mary Kate Hughes suited up with the varsity, played, but didn't score for Woodland.

GSHL 3A
The special guest at the Prairie "Victory Tour" last night were the Union Titan's. After a slow start the band struck up hit after hit in the 2nd & 3rd quarters on their way to a lopsided 52 - 24 win. Lindsey Levenan was out standing with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Kristen Munson and Christine Sonners added 11 points each. "And the Band Plays on".

Camas and Hudson's Bay hook up last night with the Papermaker's rolling to a 57 - 41 victory. Haley Smith lead all scores with 13 points for Camas, and Brittany Davis scored 12 for the Eagle's.

Columbia River jumped all over Fort Vancouver in the first quarter leaping out to a 25-3 lead. River then cruised to a 63 - 43 victory over the Trapper's. Allie Holterman's 11 points and Laura Luther's 10 lead the Chieftain's. Liz Girtle scored 14 and Erika Virgen-Vazquez had 13 to pace Fort.

GSHL 4A
First place Skyview played like a first place team Storming in to the Thunder Dome and defeating Mountain View 56 - 38. Brooke Bowen and Kailee Oliver scored 13 apiece and Nikki Bond added 11 to lead the Storm. Evie Everett had 16 for the Thunder.

Heritage rebounded after a tough lost Monday to defeat Battle Ground 53 - 49. Although the Tiger's minus Gabi Dixson did make a late run to close the game to within 4 points. The T-wolves seem to be having a problem closing the deal. Remember they had a 16 point lead against Skyview just Monday only to lose the game in the last minute. Justine Joudrey lead all scores with 14 points and Clara Russell had 13 to lead the T-wolves, Sam Codi had 11 and Haley Grossman's 10 pace the Tiger's.

Kelso smacked Evergreen last night 72 - 27. Every player for the Lassie's scored last night, lead by Cassy Teig with 12 points, Caitlynn Jackson with 11 points & 6 assist and Makenzie Martin who scored 10. The Plainsman are having another tough season but looking better.

GSHL 4A
Only one game in the 4A tonight. The rivalry game, Evergreen vs. Mountain View "1". And lead by a 19 point performance from Caitlynn Patterson the Thunder take game "1", 48 - 41. Evergreen did not go quietly into the dark though. After a lack luster first half, 16-7, both teams woke up in the 2nd half, and made it interesting. The Plainsman scoring there biggest output in any quarter of the year, in the 4th quarter scroing 20 points, they just couldn't get the defensive stops they needed to close the gap. Mt. View did just enough to survive. Amber Berry's 14 points and Audrey Fraizer's 10 lead Evergreen.

GSHL 3A
Camas vs. Union is turning into a fairly big rivalry itself, and what a game. Tied at 26 at the half, both teams came out in the 3rd quarter red hot. First Union with a 9-0 run, then Camas with a 8-0 run. Both teams scored 22 points in the 3rd quarter to really heat up this contest. Things stayed just as hot in the 4th as Union held on to win 69 - 66. Megan Dire had 19 points, including 10 free throws in the 4th quarter, Brittany Blumenthal added 15, Kynnedy Mosley had 14, and Janae Davis got up off her sick bed to add 12 for the Titan's. Melissa Williams hit a career high with 23 points in defeat for the Papermaker's.

Camas did a fund raiser for the fight against breast cancer. The girl's wore pink uniforms last night and raised over $4,000.00. Congratulations Papermaker's you are the real winners.

Hudon's Bay and Fort Vancouver, a pretty good little rivalry in itself, played into overtime with a 3 point desperation shot by Katie Endresen ending regulation in a tie. But in OT it was all Bay, lead by Kelsey Frasier's 8 points in OT, 18 on the night the Eagle's win 56 - 49. Ramona Vercher scored 10 for Bay, and Erika Virgen-Vazques had 19 points to lead the Trapper's.

The Temptations were my favorite group growing up in LA in the late 60's early 70's, and there was a song out called "Ball of Confusion", and Melvin with his deep voice would sing the hook in the song, saying "And the Band Played On". That's the hook for the Prairie Falcon's. "The Band Plays On". I'm affectionately calling it the "Victory Tour", either way in the 3A the Falcon's are rolling and they didn't miss a beat last night defeating Columbia River 62 - 22. Angela Gelhar and Christine Sonners had 12 points each, and Lindsey Levenan scored 10 to lead Prairie.

GHSL 2A
Washougal continues to knock on the door of victory but not be able to walk through it. Mark Morris held on to a 39 - 37 victory in Long View, winning on a last minute 3 pointer. Kelee Lambert had 10 points to lead the Monarchs, and Alicia McElroy went for 18 for the Panther's in defeat.

Farrine Scott had 22 points, Nichole Kates added 12 for the red hot Ridgefield Spudder's to defeat the Woodland Beaver's last night 58 - 49. The Beaver's Emily Smith had 16 points, Jessica Hughes and McKenzie Heberer had 10 apiece with Heberer adding 9 blocks and Hughes adding 7 assist.

Trico 1A
LaCenter got back on track, getting some of there regulars back, defeating Castle Rock 51 - 35. Lauren Baker had 16 points and played a great all around game, Marissa Moore had 14 and Hannah Trigg added 11.

The Skyview Storm are in first place in the GSHL 4A, mid-way through the season.

You know, high school sports is so entertaining. Watching these young ladies play, feeling the pressure, making mistakes, and making big plays, it is great. I really enjoyed myself last night watching Skyview and Heritage go at it. Thank you ladies. All of you should get out and see a game sometime. Not just yours or your kids team. It's really entertaining.

For the first 31 minutes of the game, Heritage had the lead. In fact for the first 3 quarters of the game, it was clear Heritage was the better team. They stood on the verge of blowing Skyview out, leading by as many as 16 points late in the game. Then the Storm blew in, Heritage made some substitutions, some turnovers, some big shots feel for Skyview, the defense step up, and the pressure shifted onto the T-wolves shoulders. The Storm was the better team down the stretch and the final score 40 - 38 proved it. The Storm won the 4th quarter 14-2, that was the difference. As one of the Storm players put it. "We just wanted it more". So for that 1 minute Skyview had the lead.
Kailee Oliver's defensive pressure and steals prove to be the big turning point. Late in the game, anytime there was a lose ball, or a scramble she came up with it. And the aggression of freshman Maddie Van Liew who seem to thrive under the pressure, getting rebounds and hustling along with some big late free throws, even though others made the big shots late in the game, these two really won the game for Skyview. Van Liew and Brooke Bowen lead the Storm in scoring with 10 apiece. Bowen hit the lead changing shot with just over a minute remaining in the game.
No one hit double figures for Heritage, Justine Joudrey, Clara Russell and Chawncy McClenan lead Heritage in scoring.

Battle Ground and Kelso tangled last night to a 63 - 50 Lassie win. Kelso jumped out early 17-7 and kind of cruise in to victory behind Caitlynn Jackson's 17 points and Carly Perkins 10. The Tiger's got a big game from Gabi Dixon with a career high 24 points, and Mai Galusha with 10.

Saturday results; 1/24/09

Four non-league games where played Saturday in an attempt to make up for some of the games that where postponed in December.

Columbia River faced St. Mary's of Portland, now coached by Art Royas ex-Hudson's Bay coach. This was a battle that saw St. Mary's jump out early. River made a great 3rd quarter come back, and then held on in a back an forth 4th quarter to win 51 - 49. Aimee Bolton scored 21 points and Laura Luther added 15 for the Chieftain's.

Evergreen and Ridgefield squared off Saturday. The Spudder's mashed out to a 42-11 first half lead, and cruised in to a 63 - 32 victory, solidifying themselves in this weeks Power Ranking. Nicole Kates lead all scoring with 21 points, Lauren Landerholm had 18, and Shelby Williams added 11.

Washougal squabbled with Interlake but came up short 52 - 40. Outside of a weak second quarter, Washougal played them very well. The challenge is putting together 4 quarters of play against a talented team. Alicia McElroy scored 22 points for the Panther's.

R.A. Long lost last night in overtime against Hoquiam. The Lumberjill's went scoreless in the overtime period final score 59 - 51. Katie Gudgell had 17 points, Sadie Petersen added 14 points and Christina Driscoll scored 10.

DREAMS DO COME TRUE

As I sat here, as a 50 year old black man, I was contemplating how to show my pride, express my honor and my feeling of satisfaction, with out coming across as a racial flag waving arrogant person. Then it came to me as clear as day. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for many things, but as he so eloquently put it "He had a Dream". On this MLK Day, celebrating his life, and his dream and on the eve of the greatest fulfillment of his dream, a black man, Barack Obama being inaugurated as President of the United States, it's all about personal vision, dreaming, setting goals and working to accomplish them.
This is the message I try to get across to every young lady that comes to my clinics, camps, and plays for me. Set goals, dream freely, express your dreams, work hard at making them reality and they will come true. No matter how many people say you can't do it, or say you're crazy... Dream on. Reach for the sky, anything is available to you, if your dream is big enough. Remember what I always quote...
"When your dreams and goals are bigger then the obstacles that get in your way, you will find a way to overcome those obstacles and obtain your dreams and goals".
Do you want to be a Varsity starter, All League, All State, play in College, you can do it, if you believe it.
After all, a black man is President of the United States, the reality of a persecuted black man's DREAM...

A LETTER FROM A COACH THAT CARES

This letter is in response to an email I sent to coach Glenn Flanagan of Woodland HS. I recently received information from a family at the school that one of his players had been diagnosed with cancer. This was his response.

Hey Jay,
Marykate Hughes, a sophomore, for us has been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. She comes from a wonderful family of 10 kids. They are definitely a basketball family as well. Her oldest sister Ashley Hughes was first team all GSHL for Woodland last year and sister Jessica is currently the point guard for Woodland's varsity. You may remember Marykate worked out with you in the fall here at Woodland. For me as her coach, she is a wonderful inspiration to me.
Here's a little of her story, sometime around her being in the fifth or sixth grade, Marykate was diagnosed with cancer in her right arm. They caught the cancer, but it left her with some limited mobility in her right arm. Not to be deterred, Marykate wasn't going to give up playing basketball, so she switched from playing right handed to left handed and continued playing. She has worked hard and not even her teammates can tell that she was originally right handed. She currently is one of the leading scorers and best players on our junior varsity team.
Recently doctors found out that the cancer has come back in her right arm and the family is now waiting to here as to what their options are. As expected though Marykate came back at practice the day after her examination, with a smile on her face, shagging balls for teammates and doing what she can to be a part of the team.
Jay your thoughts and prayers are appreciated. As Jimmy Valvano said and Marykate is showing us, "cancer may take away your physical abilities, but it cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul, those 3 things will carry on forever.
From me, I would just encourage everyone to step back, take a deep breath give your coach a hug, your teammates a hug, your daughters a hug and lets not take for granted this great sport that we are allowed to play.
Coach Glenn Flanagan (father of 3) Woodland High School Girl's Basketball

To the Hughes family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
To the readers of this blog, feel free to express your thoughts via comments or email me. We will rally behind this young lady Marykate Hughes and make a difference.

Friday night results; 1/23/09

GHSL 4A
In a very entertaining game, Skyview's young squad lead by freshman Nikki Bond with16 points, and upper classman Macy Mukensnabl with 11, and Kaliee Oliver with 10, held off a late 3rd quarter and early forth quarter serge from Kelso's Caitlynn Jackson and Carly Perkins scoring 19 points each, to win 55 - 51. It was in the second quarter, with a full court press by the Storm, and some foul trouble for the Lassie's, that turn'd around a 10 - 4 lead for Kelso to a 24 - 17 halftime lead for Skyview. Then early in the 3rd quarter the lead was stretch to 16 points before Jackson was put back into the game to restore order for Kelso. She scored 10 quick points and help the Lassie's close to within 1 point 44-43. The Storm's Bond responded with 5 quick points of her own in the forth quarter and closed out the victory for Skyview.

Heritage didn't have much problem handling Mt. View last night 48 - 23. A 26-9 first half literally sealed the deal early. Chawncy McClenan lead all scores with 11, and T.T. Martin had 10 for the T-wolves who are undefeated in league.

Now the big match up Monday Skyview vs Heritage.

Evergreen was able to make the game interesting in the 1st quarter down only 12-17, but couldn't keep it up, as Battle Ground slowly pulled away to a 54 - 26 Tiger win. Kiley Thomas had 13 points, and Aubri Squires scored 10 to lead Battle Ground to there 1st league win.

GSHL 3A
Things in the 3A are unfolding the way you thought they would. Union beat Fort Vancouver 57 - 37. Playing without injured Shamarica Scott, their all everything forward, the Trapper's kept it interesting lead by Erika Virgen-Vazquez with 10 points, until mid way through the 3rd quarter when the Titian's lead by Megan Dire's 19 points and Janae Davis with 15, took control.

Columbia River got a victory over Hudson's Bay jumping out to a 24-6 first quarter lead and never looking back, cruising to a 67 - 34 win. Ramona Vercher had 11 points for the Eagle's. Laura Luther scored 12 points and Kassilin Cloyd had 11 to lead the Chieftains.

Heather Corral, Angela Gehlar and Lindsey Levanen were the leads tonight for the Prairie Falcon's girl's basketball "Victory Tour". Tonight Prairie defeated Camas 70 - 44. Actually the Papermaker's played a competitive 1st half, but the Falcon's turn'd it up it the 3rd quarter.

GSHL 2A
Speaking of "Victory Tour's" Hockinson is trying to start one of their own. They handled Washougal last night convincingly 62 - 20. The Panther's defense held down the big gun's Dean and Mlivic but Amanda McCarty scored 17 and Michelle Haagan had 16 to make up the difference for the Hawk's. Alicia McElroy scored 14 for the Panther's.

Solid steady play from Ridgefield moves them into the Top 5 Power Rankings this week with a victory over R.A. Long 50 - 29. The Spudder's continue to play well with an injured Anna Pengra watching. Shelby Williams with 13 points, Farrine Scott 12, and Nichole Kates 10, are making up for Anna's absence.

With the score tied at 29 to start the 4th quarter. Mark Morris doubled Woodlands scoring output in the quarter 16 to 8 and won the game 45 - 37. The Monarch's had 10 players score, with no player scoring more the 6 points for the victory. McKenzie Heberer was 1 point shy of a double/double with 9 points and 10 rebounds and Emily Smith had 12 points to lead the Beaver's.

Trico 1A
In a battle for first place between league undefeated Ilwaco and LaCenter, the Wildcat's came up short 50 - 43. With Lauren Baker crawling out her sick bed, and an injured Hannah Trigg LaCenter didn't have a full tank, and in the forth quarter that was apparent only scoring 6 points and giving up 16. Marissa Moore scored 13 and Katrina Chamberlain 11 to lead LaCenter. Vallori Crowston 14 points lead the Fishermen.

Shamarica Scott - Out for the season

Fort Vancouver's star forward sophomore Shamarica Scott hurt her knee in practice last week, and is probably out for the rest of the season. An MRI revealed a torn cartilage, that will require surgery. We wish her luck and God's speed in recovery and rehab. Shamarica's a gym rat, it will be difficult for her to relax and allow her knee to heal properly, but that's the best remedy. REST...
Non-League Action
Columbia River started strong and stayed strong all game to double up on Evergreen last night 66 - 33. Leading the scoring for the Chieftains were Sarah Bobbe with 13, Aimee Bolton hit 12, Kassilin Cloyd added 10.
R.A. Long in a tough, back and forth battle, held on to defeat Scappose 40 - 38. The Lumberjill's were lead by Katie Gudgell's 14 points.

OK, the brief holiday celebration is over, back to work "it's hoops time"

Tuesday results, 1/20/09

I headed north last night, looking forward to seeing a couple of players that have put up some good numbers so far this year. Anna Pengra a 6' senior out of Ridgefield was scheduled to play against 5'7 junior Lauren Baker and Hannah Trigg a 5'8 junior both out of LaCenter. The game was played, but Trigg would be the only one of the 3 I'd see play tonight, and she was slowed by an injury. It seems that Pengra is suffering from a back injury, so she sat on a pillow on the bench, cheering on her team. And Baker called the coach just hours before the game, sick with the flu and couldn't get out of the bed. You can just imagine my disappointment.
But I was able to see a good non-league game, some what competitive in the first quarter. A chance to see 2A GHSL Ridgefield HS for the first time. A tough well coached team, solid, with out one of there impact players. And 1A Trico league, LaCenter HS, out man'd tonight but scrappy. The final score was 63 - 39 but it felt, for most of the game, to be closer than that. The Spudder's Lauren Landerholm, Shelby Willimas, and Nichole Kates were just to much for LaCenter's injured Trigg, Marissa Moore and Katrina Chamberlain to overcome.

GSHL 3A
Camas Papermaker's stayed undefeated in league with a victory over the Chieftains at Columbia River last night, 51 - 37. Melissa Williams lead all scoring with 14 points, and Emily Thomas added 11 for Camas.

Union had no problem defeating Hudson's Bay 71 - 23. The Titan's Janae Davis played huge with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kynnedy Mosley added 15.

Prairie's "victory tour" performed last night to a tune of 75 - 11 over Fort Vancouver. Lauren Goecke toss in 13 points, Lindsey Levanen and Heather Corral had 12 points each for the Falcons.

Congratulations to Skyview's freshman Nikki Bond for being selected the Columbian Newspaper "athlete of the week".

Friday night results; 1/16/09

Two players in Southwest Washington score over 30 points in victory last night. Freshman sensation from Skyview Nikki Bond hit for 30 and Junior Lauren Baker from LaCenter had 33 points last night both in comfortable wins for their teams. Bombing it from long range paid benefits for them both.

LaCenter took on Stevenson last night in 1A Trico action. The Wildcat's built a 40-20 lead at the half and ran a way to a 80 - 49 victory. It's going to be hard for anyone to beat LaCenter in league this year. Let's hope they can stay focus when the state tournament comes around. Obviously Baker lead all scoring with 33, Hannah Trigg had 19, and Marissa Moore had 15 points. Stevenson's Kali Stump had 14 points.

4A GSHL
Skyview's defensive pressure and the pure shooting of Bond was just to much for Evergreen last night in an 82 - 34 run away. A 29-6 first quarter, set the tempo for the night. Katie Swanson had 11 points and Kailee Oliver added 10 to go along with Bond's 30 in victory for the Storm.

Heritage traveled up to Kelso last night and had a happy bus ride home, after defeating the Lassie's 60 - 48. The T-wolves blew open the game after a tight 1st quarter out scoring Kelso 34-13 in the next 16 minutes. Carly Perkins finish with 22 points for Kelso in defeat. TaShawna Gordon had her best game of her sophomore season with 19 points and solid inside play, and Justine Joudrey added 14 to pace the T-wolves.

Mountain View defeated Battle Ground in a hard fought defensive battle 39 - 27. Haley Holboke scored 11 for the Thunder.

3A GSHL
It's always interesting to see how a team that gets beat bad in a previous game, bounces back. Kudo's to Union. After suffering a horrible defeat to Prairie Tuesday, they came back to hold off Columbia River in overtime, 48 - 45. Lead by Megan Dire with 19 points including 2 clutch free throws at the end of regulation, and Janae Davis with 12 the Titan's were able to come from behind and defeat the Chieftain's. Allie Holterman had 16 points to lead River.

Prairie continues it victory tour defeating Hudson's Bay 79 - 7. Yeap I said (seven). The Falcon's had 4 girl's in double figures, Kristen Munson 12, Angela Gelhar 11, Marielle Ibaretta 10, and Lauren Goecke with 10.

Camas took down Fort Vancouver 67 - 34 in their best win of the year. The full court defense just swallow up the Trapper's and lead to many easy lay ups for the Papermaker's. Lead by Haley Smith's 12 points, Amy Faulkner with 10, and Katelyn Henson with 10, Camas had 10 players score. Fort was lead by Liz Girtle with 12 points and Shamarica Scott with 11.

2A GSHL
Woodland 38, Washougal 28 but the score doesn't reflect the battle. These girl's played hard, fortunately no one got hurt in this hard fought battle. Woodland couldn't afford it, down to 6 varsity players due to previous injuries. McKenzie Heberer wasn't going to allow the Beaver's to lose. Before fouling out, she grabbed 8 rebounds, had 6 block shots, and 3 assist to go with her 10 points. The Panther's pride themselves on defense as they took numerous offensive fouls placing several Woodland players in foul trouble. Alicia McElroy scored 13 to lead Washougal.

Hockinson Hawk's are soaring as they defeated Ridgefield 55 - 31. The Hawk's seem to have a good chemistry of players, outside shooters, strong inside presences, tough defenders, and a cleaver enough ball handler to take them far. They were lead tonight by Lejla Mlivic with 20 points, Amanda McCarty with 12 and Jennifer Pickup added 11. The Spudder's Shelby Williams had 10 points in defeat.

R.A. Long defeated Mark Morris 48 - 30 in the battle in Longview. A huge first half set the pace for the Lumberjill's up 31 - 5 at half time. Katie Gudgell lead R.A. Long with 11 points. Taybra Teeters had 12 and Kelee Lambert had 10 for the Monarch's.

The first of many busy nights in girl's hoops

Tuesday night results;

4A GSHL
There is a clear separation between the haves and the have not's in the 4A. That separation became even clearer last night. Heritage, Kelso and Skyview now 2 - 0 in league, seem to have what it takes to fight for the league title and a birth to the state tournament. Mt View, Evergreen, and Battle Ground now 0 - 2 in league, will have to fight a little harder to reach the promise land.
Heritage jump out to an early lead and never looked back coasting to a 63 - 31 victory over Evergreen. Sophomore Justine Joudrey lead the T-wolves with 12 points.
Skyview toppled Battle Ground 82 - 56. Nikki Bond scored 23, Kailee Oliver had 17, and Shelby Mason added 10 for the Storm. The Tiger's leading scorers were Cassie Black with 16, Kiley Thomas had 13, and Gabi Dixon added 10.
Kelso defeated Mt. View 61 - 54 in the closes game of the 4A last night. Mt. View was down an injured Evie Everett, who would probably have made a difference. Caitlynn Jackson and Carly Perkins lead the Lassie's with 13 points each. Haley Holboke had 16 for the Thunder and Caitlynn Patterson had a double/double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.

3A GHSL
The "queens of the mountain" flex their collective muscles last night, coming out of the locker room feeling as if they had something to prove, and proved it. Prairie held "up and coming" Union scoreless through out the 1st quarter and half of the 2nd quarter running out to a 24 to (zero) lead before the Titan's knew what hit them. The Falcon's cruised to a 58 - 24 victory showing that they haven't miss a beat, changing leagues, or losing seniors. Kristen Munson had 17 points and Lauren Goecke scored 10 for Prairie.
A third quarter that saw Fort Vancouver score only 2 points sealed the way for Columbia River to defeat the Trapper's 43 - 29. Amiee Bolton and Laura Luther lead the scoring for the Chieftain's with 12 and 10 points respectively. Shamarica Scott had 19 for the Trapper's.
The Camas Papermaker's smothered the Hudson's Bay Eagle's in the 3rd quarter not giving up a single point, in route to their 55 - 38 victory. Haley Smith of Camas lead all scores with 12, Kelsey Frasier and Brittney Davis had 10 points each for the Eagles.

2A GSHL
Hockinson clearly appears to be the best team in the 2A through the preseason. They did nothing last night to dispel that theory, handling Mark Morris 63 - 24. Michelle Haagen lead all scores with 19 points, Daron Dean and Lejla Mlivic had 16 each and Amanda McCarty added 10 for the Hawk's.
The Ridgefield Spudder's took it to the Panther's of Washougal 69 - 27. Leading scores were Nichole Kates with 19 points, Lauren Landerholm had 18, and Anna Pengra scored 14 points for Ridgefield.
In somewhat of a shocker, R.A. Long defeated Woodland 54 - 38. Christina Driscoll scored 16 points and Katie Guigell added 14 for the Lumberjill's.

Trico 1A
LaCenter keeps rolling along, defeating White Salmon 57 - 25. Lauren Baker scored 21 points to lead the Wildcat's and Hannah Trigg added 12.

Next games this Friday.

RE-Posting article from November 2008

EXPOSURE EQUATES TO SCHOLARSHIPS

Hoopgurlz.com was a Seattle Washington based website, giving girl's high school basketball in the State of Washington, great exposure. During it's 'hey day' here in Washington, the exposure given to high school girl's basketball reach out nationally. Many Washington female basketball athletes received college scholarships to schools all across the country. Washington was a hot bed for girl's basketball talent. In fact June Daughtery lost her head coaching job at the University of Washington partly because of her inability to keep the great in state talent home. Two years ago Hoopgurlz.com signed on with ESPN.com and they now have a national base and scope. Giving great exposure for girl's high school basketball across the country for ESPN, but the state of Washington has suffered somewhat since. This year 2009, only 9 girl's through out the state have signed "national letter's of intent" with major colleges in the early signing period. Down 25% from 2008, and as much as 50% in 2007 and previous years. Exposure is the key. That's my goal with this blog/site. Your help is needed and appreciated. Our girls have the talent, we have to help them with exposure.

Here are the girls in our state that signed letter's of intent for 2009;(unfortunately non from Southwest Washington)
Lindsey Moore - Kentwood H.S. (WA) - Nebraska
Carly Noyes - Moses Lake H.S. (WA) - Washington State
Nichole Jackson - Auburn-Riverside H.S. (WA) - Portland State
Alyssa Smith - Archbishop Murphy H.S. (WA) - Montana
Ally Schmitt - Snohomish H.S. (WA) - Montana State
Kenzie De Boer - Lynden Christian H.S. (WA) - Montana
Shannon Byrne - Emerald Ridge H.S. (WA) - Idaho State
Karley Lampman - Snohomish H.S. (WA) - Portland State
Amanda Thompson - Kentlake H.S. (WA) - Cal State Northridge
Catie Richards - Mount Si. H. S. (WA) - Humboldt State

We can work togeter to be sure that this low number doesn't happen again, and the deserving girl's in our area, get the exposure and opportunity they deserve for 2010.

I agree we have suffered but not by the departure of hoopgurlz. Glen was a little bias in his opinions . I think we are just seeing a down year in the talent pool. I think it will grow again in the 2011-2012 group. There are a lot of young girls in this state with some talent and look for them to make noise.

Over the weekend;

Fort Vancouver hosted Skyview in a non-league game. The Trapper's couldn't hold back the Storm as Skyview was victorious 46 - 28. The Storm was lead by Nikki Bond with 12 points, and the Trapper's Liz Girtle had 11 points.

SUNDAY CLINICS

Wow, what a great turnout for our first session. There were 3 varsity high school coaches in attendence and they seem to appreciate what the girls were being taught and picking up in this session. We will continue the efforts, wanting to bond more with high school coaches, cut down on the anomosity between club team and high school coaches, and make the talent level in Southwest Washington greater. Thanks to everyone that came out. We'll see all of you, and more of you, next Sunday.

Friday night games; 1/9/09

It's league play, it counts now. Well I guess all the games count, but these games have a little more post season importance, they get you to districts and state. The 4A got started with all 6 Greater St. Helen's teams playing. The 3A & 2A will start league play next week. Ok so how did things shake out.

The best contest of the evening was Skyview Storming into the Thunder Dome, Mountian View High School and leaving with a 58 - 46 victory. A balance attack by the Storm lead by Tori Conley with 11 points and 3 other's with 9, prove to be to much for the Thunder lead by Caitlynn Patterson with 11 points. It was the 3rd quarter that rain down on Mt. View only scoring 6 points in the quarter.

You always wonder how a team is going to bounce back after an embarrassing lost, but Heritage seems to have weather the storm and came out ready to take it to Battle Ground Friday night. Coach Rogers express that it was the best 1st quarter his team has played all year, ending with a 21-5 lead. The T-wolves went on to a lopsided victory over the Tiger's 58 - 36. Clara Russell is really in a good flow now, going for her second game over 20 points, with 22 in this contest for Heritage. Sam Codi had 12 points for Battle Ground in defeat.

Kelso's Lassie's visited Evergreen last night and dismantled the Plainsmen 70 - 22. Evergreen is having trouble scoring only getting 3 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. They were lead by Amber Berry with 10 points in the lost, so the rest of the team had only had 12 points. Kelso's 6'1 junior superstar Carly Perkins had 15 points, and Madeline Zbaeren added 10.

In non-league actions at Fort Vancouver, Shamarica Scott broke out with 26 points to help the Trapper's defeat R.A. Long's Lumberjill's 46 - 36. Katie Gudgill stood toe to toe with Scott scoring 21 points of her own for R.A. Long, but it wasn't enough.

LaCenter still proving to be the class act of the 1A Trico league defeated Kalama 71 - 53. Hannah Trigg tossed in 20 points, Lauren Baker and Katrina Chamberline had 14 each for the Wildcat's, who are now 8 - 2.

Camas traveled up to Longview to play Mark Morris and got beat 55 - 44 by the Monarch's. The Papermaker's got solid play from Melissa Williams with 12 points, but Mark Morris prove to be to balance, Taybra Teeters had 12 points, & Christy Kirkpatrick added 10.

Thursday results; 1/8/09

Beaver's ground the Eagle's last night in Woodland 61 - 27. Hudson's Bay coming off it's first win of the season, couldn't stay in flight as Woodland simply over powered them from start to finish. Emily Smith finish with 20 points for the Beaver's, Kaitlyn Moses added 11, and Charity Arn had 10.

Wednesday results; 1/7/09

Only one game involving local girl's teams was played Wednesday, and from when I walked in to the gym you could feel tension. You see neither team had scratch a victory in the win column this year, and both wanted it really bad. They both felt they could get it, last night. Washougal's Mary Kartovil ran over to say hello, (she was finally able to play in her first game of the season) and she was very excited. My cell phone received a text messages from Evergreen's Breonah Scruggs (saying "I see you") she and her teammates where focused and ready to play. Both coaches Charlie Boyce ,Washougal, and Kathy Walker, Evergreen took time out of their pre-games to say hello. I couldn't help but notice them both trying to relax, but both really excited about the possibilities of the night.
As you know, I go to a lot of games through out the year. This game was as exciting a game I've been to so far this year. You would have thought it was between two undefeated teams battling for playoff position. A tough, hard fought, back and forth contest. Congratulations to both teams but only one could win. The home team Panther's lead by Alicia McElroy's 18 points, beat the Plainsmen 44 - 36. With the score 35-34 with 1:18 left, free throws and turnovers made the difference in that last minute or so. Thank you, to both teams for an entertaining and great game. Viewers be sure to get out and support our local girls teams. Not just your kids game, but go to see another sometime. You'll enjoy it.
I rarely do this, but because there was only one game, here is the box scores as provided by the Columbian newspaper.
For Evergreen;
Audrey Frazier 8, Breonah Scruggs 4, Amber Berry 9, Rebecca Wininger 2, Cheslsee Telles 4, Kayley Weaver 2, Anna Bellen 2, DeLane 3, Cortney Rutherford 2
For Washougal;
Darcy Akers 4, Kendell Utter 2, Alicia McElroy 18, Jordin Seekins 3, Elle Wade 6, Heidi Greear 2, Mary Kratovil 9

Tuesday results; 1/6/09

Well the big build up, turn'd out to be nothing more than a little puff. Prairie vs Heritage look like it may be a tough contest. Prairie supposedly in a rebuilding year, Heritage the up and coming team in Southwest Washington. But the name on the jersey seem to humble the T-wolves early and by the time Heritage shock it off, the game was out of hand. 53 - 31. The Falcon's Lindsey Levenan seem to be able to do what ever she wanted to on the court. Lindsey ended with 12 points but could have had twice that if the game was tighter and she played more. Christine Sooner also ended with 12. No one for the T-wolves broke the double digit mark. Ok 3A, here they come, battle tested, and perhaps feeling a little disrespected.

Woodland had to play without starting forward McKenzie Heberer against W.F. West, and that appears to have been the difference in a 68 - 60 lost last night. Freshman Emily Smith had 33 points and had a great game, Jessica Hughes added 12 for the Beaver's, but in the 4th quarter Woodland need another offensive option and a defensive stopper. They could find neither. Giving up 23 4th quarter points and only scoring 10 in defeat.

After a slow start, and a schedule that kept them from playing many early games, Ridgefield has bounce back and picked up another victory last night against Aberdeen 55 - 49. After sprinting out to a great start, they feel behind in the 3rd quarter but bounce back in the 4th to pull out the victory. Nichole Kates had 13 points, Shelby Williams tossed in 12, and Anna Pengra had 10

After stubbing their collective toe last week, Hockinson got the ship back on course and defeated Centralia 61 - 38. Although only two players scored in double figures, Amanda McCarty 14 and Michelle Haagen 10, everyone contributed. Nine players scored and the defense of the Hawk's is where they'll be most effective in league, as they were last night.

Fort Vancouver lost after holding a 9 point lead going into the 4th quarter against Mark Morris in Longview, 44 - 41. Kylie Farmer scored all her 12 points in the 17 point 4th quarter for the Monarchs, and Taybra Teeters scored 10 points and 19 rebounds to lead Mark Morris. Katie Endresen had 13 points, and Shamerica Scott added 12 in the lost for the Trapper's.

Washougal feel behind early 17 - 1, and although they put up a good fight, the Panther's couldn't quite get over the hump and suffered a 41 - 32 defeat to White Salmon.

Monday results; 1/5/09

The Big game of the night was Skyview HS visiting Union HS. A clash of two of the "Power Rankings" top schools. And a battle it was. The first half see/saw'd back and forth. First Skyview taking a slim lead then Union fighting back to lead by one at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Union tightened up the defense and held the Storm to only 6 points. That prove to be the difference as the Titan's went on to victory 52 - 41. Janae Davis prove to be to much inside presences, scoring 22 points, Megan Dire toss in 13, and Bre Sorensen had 11. It was the defense that really step up for Union, holding freshman sensation Nikki Bond to 9 points and Kaliee Oliver to 8 for Skyview.

After losing to Battle Ground in the Tiger Tournament over the winter vacation last month, Camas hosted the Tiger's last night and cruised to a 43 - 33 win. Kelsi Krill was the only double digit scorer with 11 points for the Papermaker's. But it was the aggressive defensive play that was the key to the victory for Camas.

After a nip and tuck 3 quarters of play, Hudson's Bay had a 19 point outburst in the final quarter to pull away and win by 11 against Evergreen last night 50 - 39. The score was tied 31 apiece to start the 4th. The Eagle's Kelsey Fraiser had 14 points, and Brittney Oberle had 11. Audrey Frazier pace the Plainsmen with 14 points.

Clara Russell had a break out game with 21 points to lead Heritage to a 67 - 32 victory over Fort Vancouver. Heritage sprinted out of the blocks and had a 30 point lead at half time, so Coach Rogers rested most of his starters preparing for tonight's contest against Prairie. This open the door for Clara to find her offensive game of which she had been somewhat struggling with in recent games. TaShawna Gordon had 14 points for the T-wolves. The Trapper's Shamreica Scott hit for 12 points and Erika Virgen-Vazquez scored 11.

Kelso blew into Columbia River, sprinted out of the gate scoring 45 points in the first half and cruised to a 71 - 55 win last night. Carley Perkins scored 17 points for the Lassie's, Madeline Zbaeren had 12 and Danielle Birch scored 11. Laura Luther had 16 and Allie Holterman scored 13 to lead the Chieftain's.

Ridgefield defeated Kalama 56 - 33. Three girl's reached double figures for the Spudder's Nichole Kates scoring 13, Shelby Williams had 12 and Anna Pengra had 10.

With all the snow cancellations last week, tonight's schedule is packed with plenty of make up games. The highlight game is Prairie visiting Heritage, also Fort Vancouver will travel to Mark Morris, Ridgefield is at Aberdeen, Woodland goes to W.F. West, Washougal visits White Salmon, Centralia comes to Hockinson.

Saturday results;

At the Oak Harbor Tournament, Skyview got off to a bad start Saturday only scoring 4 points in the first quarter and although making a valiant attempt late, couldn't quit recover, going down to defeat to Wenatchee 48 - 51. Macy Mukensnabl score 12 points to pace the Storm. Dani Hallberg of Wenatchee lead all scoring with 27 points.

Hockinson tasted defeat for the first time this year going down in overtime to Kennewick 65 - 59. In a back and forth battle, the Hawk's could only muster 4 points in overtime and feel. Daron Dean lead the team in scoring with 18 points, Amanda McCarty had 14 and Lejla Mlivic had 10. There are no undefeated teams in the Clark County area now.

It seem as if Battle Ground had a plan Saturday night against Fort Vancouver, get Shamarica Scott in foul trouble, and it work. Gabi Dixon pounded the inside and was able to get early fouls against Scott that sent her to the bench early and she never really was able to get into her game. The Tiger's took advantage and cruised to a 49 - 32 victory over the Trapper's. Dixon lead the Tiger's in scoring with 15 points, and Kiley Thomas added 14.

Carly Perkins toss in 17 of her 26 points in the first half to lead the way for Kelso over R.A. Long 58 - 41 Saturday night. Perkin's 17 first half points tied the team out put for R.A. Long. Sadie Petersen was the leading scorer for the Lumberjill's with 13.

Friday night games;

"Speed kills", that's an ole saying. In basketball, if you've got it, it helps, if not, you're dead. Last night in Tumwater, Kelso was killed by speed 68 - 59. Countless break away layups after defensive rebounds for Tumwater buried Kelso. It seem like a recording, Tumwater would get the defensive rebound, out let pass then layup. Kelso leading scorer was Carly Perkins with 26 points, Caitlynn Jackson and Jessica Warthen had 10 each. Hopefully this games marks Caitlynn's full recovery from off season surgery and she'll be ready for league play, the Lassie's will need her.

In other games, Skyview lost to Anacortes 61 - 53, Washougal was beat by Mollalla of Oregon 69 - 29, & Ridgefield defeated Chehalis 49 - 29, and Prairie beat Norway (stats not available for these games)

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S 2009

Just a few games to report today. Union end's up 2 - 1 in the Gresham Tournament in Oregon over the holidays. Wednesday they defeated the host team Gresham 51 - 46. Watch out GSHL 3A, looks like Megan Dire is finding her shooting touch as she scores 24 points to lead the Titan's over the Gopher's. Kynndey Mosley hit double figures with 10. Union beat Franklin of Portland on Monday and lost to Reynolds on Tuesday.

In Hawaii, Mountview View wins, defeating Kau HS out of Hawaii 50 - 35. Caitlynn Patterson score 13 points, Evie Everett and Haley Holboke each had 10 in the victory. The Thunder head home now, after what I'm sure was a great time in Hawaii.

Skyview lost yesterday in a close game to Hillsboro 48 - 44. Nikki Bond lead the Storm with 17 points, and Kaliee Oliver added 14 in defeat. Skyview went 1-1 in the tournament in Oregon.

I still don't have the results of the Hudson's Bay games in Stayton, but we will keep efforting them.
